LA Riots 15 Years On

While reading an article on the LA Riots of 15 years ago recounted in the Times, I recalled the rage I felt while watching the police beating their prisoner unmercifully.&nbsp I was naive enough to believe that they wouldnt, couldnt get away with that sort of brutality.

We all tut tutted in our comfortable, civilized homes and sat back waiting for JUSTICE.

To recap the story.&nbsp Rodney King was on probation for a robbery offense when patrol men detected him speeding.&nbsp Instead of pulling over he fled hitting speeds of 115 mph.&nbsp He was worried he would have his probation revoked.&nbsp When the chasing officers finally pulled him over a struggle ensued.&nbsp It is debatable what caused this struggle but some other officers quickly decided that King was resisting arrest.&nbsp Two shots from a Taser gun were fired into King by Sgt Koon and when that failed to subdue him all the officers joined in beating him senseless.

What the officers hadnt realised was that the incident was videod by a man living nearby.&nbsp This tape sent shockwaves around the world, igniting an already enraged and frustrated African American community.&nbsp
When the officers were acquitted a year later by an all white jury this fury erupted into one of the worst single riots in American histroy.&nbsp The date was 29th April 1992 and it resulted in 53 people dead.

In the midst of the furor King was quoted as saying "Can we all just get along?"
He eventually won $3.8 million in damages from the City of Los Angeles for the beating incident which was lost through some unfortunate investments.&nbsp

But this still leaves the feeling of unfairness.&nbsp For the riots were caused by a deep frustration about the lack of justice.&nbsp Racial profiling and abuse by the police has still long gone unchecked.

Stop Blaming Everyone Else!

First, Virginia Tech it is quite large (2600 acres), several miles across each way, hundreds of buildings, and at least 30,000 people on campus during the time of this incident. Closing campus and evacuating 30,000 people OFF of campus can't be done with the push of a button and especially with this situation it would have created a general panic within the community that would have caused even more problems then solutions. Imagine the traffic jams with several THOUSANDS of cars leaving all at once onto a relatively limited amounts of exits from the university.&nbsp

Second, if every incident resulted in a full swat response, not much of anything else would get done.&nbsp Investigators assessed the situation.&nbsp It appeared to be a one off lovers revenge incident.&nbsp Not that this is not a horrific tragedy in itself.&nbsp All our hearts go out to the victims.

Third, we should stop thinking about CSI and that everything in law enforcement happens instantaneously now. Interviewing witnesses, processing crime scenes, gathering evidence take HOURS and sometimes DAYS depending on the crime.&nbsp If the first murder happened within two hours, the investigators would have been lucky to get a suspect description and find a few witnesses. However, they had already developed a suspect and information, from&nbsp a witness, to believe the suspect&nbsp had already left campus and was believed to be fleeing the state . Never the less, everyone expects a decision to shut down the university which is basically a small town of 30,000 people immediately, especially when the AVAILABLE INFORMATION is that the police believe the suspect left and was gone BASED ON witness information which is ALL they have to go on at that point in time. Just think about the circumstances and vastness of this tradgedy and stop blaming people already before we know all of the information available. The honest truth&nbsp is if someone has already made up their mind that they want to kill someone and have no problem with dying themselves, there is little anyone including any law enforcement official can do to stop that person with that much determination. Unfortunately, the person that committed these acts was one of those persons.

Additionally, any one of the responding officers would have done everything to save as many people as they could because that is what&nbsp they do. Take a step back and really look at what happened and see that there is something very seriously wrong with a nation that&nbsp allows anyone to&nbsp buy guns and take them to school.&nbsp &nbsp

Porche - Buy One Get One Free!

"Porsch Dealer -"I got it wrong with buy one get one free card".
Written by Jenny Shu 23Feb07

Glen Fergusson - Sales and Marketing manager for a brand new Californian Porsche dealer has lost his job and faces possible legal proceedings as the company strives to reclaim the costs of the 18 Porches given away free under Glen's Opening day "buy one get one free promotion".&nbsp "I admit I didn't really do the numbers properly on this one" said Glen who told reporters that he had "seen the concept work really well for coffee stores" and in terms of numbers you could argue that Glen's campaign worked.&nbsp The new Porsche dealer sold 18 Porches in the first hour of the store opening."

What a shame there arent more enterprising marketing managers.&nbsp The publicity this won them is priceless!&nbsp &nbsp We have all seen the 'buy a holiday get one free' schemes used to fill the flights and hotels.&nbsp And the restaurants and coffee bars that are all thriving on increased custom.&nbsp &nbsp

How about:&nbsp 'pay&nbsp this years&nbsp tax and get next years free' &nbsp 'pay this years school fee's up front and get next years free' &nbsp 'Pay one year's utilities and get one year free' &nbsp 'Pay one years interest on your credit card and get one year's credit free' &nbsp &nbsp 'pay your rent up front and get next year's free' Or better still 'Buy one house and get one free (for grandma)'.

Any one got any good promotion suggestions?

Excessive Force Used by Marines

Are You Proud to be called Marines?

Is this an example of the best trained military in the world? Too many American military lovers are willing to call these troops *heroes* while condemning the atrocities of the enemy. How on earth can we win the hearts and minds of the people with actions like this?

&nbsp

We turn&nbsp young men and women into killers by claiming this is war.
War means we can kill who ever is in the way innocent people, old, young, inbetween, people who never did anything to us who never attacked us or gave us reason to be at war with them.&nbsp Then we wonder why young people think its ok to kill any where.

We allow our young people to be killed all in the name of war.&nbsp &nbsp A war that has served no purpose to anyone. Does no one but those affected directly by this war care what it is creating? Is Bush so hungry for our blood and others for his failures?&nbsp Has he any feelings&nbsp about what he has created for the world? God knows Bush will never suffer the pain, nightmares or poverty this has created. And we&nbsp in Western Nations allow this to continue because we sit back and let them talk and talk and talk.

India, Pak to discuss Siachen on Friday

NEW DELHI: External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee and Pakistan Foreign Minister Khurshid Mehmood Kasuri have decided to hold Defence Secretary-level talks on Siachen in Islamabad on Friday in an effort to resolve the vexed issue.

The two foreign ministers reviewed progress on Siachen and various other bilateral issues including Jammu and Kashmir and Sir Creek when they met on the sidelines of the SAARC Summit in the Capital on Monday.

Kasuri has been insisting that the two countries were close to settling the issue and given the political will, an agreement could be clinched anytime.

The two sides had agreed to demilitarise the icy heights but have failed to reach an understanding on how to do it.

India has maintained that there can be no demilitarisation till Pakistan agrees to 'iron clad' authentication of present troop positions of the respective countries.

On his meeting with Mukherjee, Kasuri said both sides agreed that bilateral relations were in a "healthy" state.

"We discussed various issues between the two countries and modalities regarding what is to be done next," he said.

"There was an agreement on what is to be done next and how to take these issues forward," he said.

On the first meeting of joint anti-terrorism mechanism recently in Islamabad, the Pakistan Foreign Minister said some viewed it with optimism while some did not.

Insisting that the meeting of the mechanism was a positive development, he said the two sides had agreed to meet again and chalked out a framework for working together to fight terrorism.

"Let us give them time," Kasuri said, cautioning against any attempt to indulge in "point scoring" on issues like whether evidence was shared or not.

"India and Pakistan have a history. There are issues on which we had differences. So it is better to resolve the issues between them bilaterally first," he said.
